Psyllium

High-fiber ingredient with significant viscosity development. Requires careful formulation to manage texture and serving size.

Multi-Fiber Systems

Combinations of two or more fiber ingredients to achieve fiber targets while managing viscosity, texture and serving size constraints.

Flavor

Flavor Development

Flavor is developed in combination with the actual protein and fiber system — not independently. The ingredient system affects how flavor performs.

Flavor development is an iterative process. The protein and fiber systems affect flavor carry, sweetness perception and aftertaste. Flavor profiles are developed and adjusted in the context of the actual formula.

Sweetener

Sweetener Systems

Sweetener selection depends on taste profile, market positioning, formula compatibility and cost.

There is no universal best sweetener system. Selection is confirmed during formula development based on the specific product requirements.

Stevia

Natural high-intensity sweetener. Aftertaste management is a key formulation consideration, particularly at higher use levels.

Monk Fruit

Natural high-intensity sweetener with clean taste profile. Cost is higher than stevia; often used in premium positioning.

Stevia + Monk Fruit

Combination system that can improve taste profile compared to either ingredient alone. Common in clean-label nutrition products.

Sucralose-Based

High-intensity sweetener with broad formula compatibility. Widely used in mainstream nutrition products.

Serving Size

Nutrition Density vs Serving Size

Increasing protein, fiber and functional ingredients increases powder volume. Development must balance multiple competing requirements.

Nutrition Target

The protein, fiber and functional ingredient targets drive the minimum ingredient quantities required.

Serving Size

Higher ingredient quantities increase serving size. Large serving sizes affect consumer experience and packaging requirements.

Water Volume

Serving size and water volume interact. High-fiber formulas may require more water to achieve acceptable texture.

Texture

Ingredient concentration affects texture. High-density formulas can become thick or gritty if not carefully balanced.

Consumer Experience

The final product must be convenient and enjoyable to consume. Serving size, texture and flavor all contribute to the consumer experience.
